My 9 year old saved up her own money to buy this toy and after she spent an hour with it, she gave up in frustration and with tears in her eyes because, she said, she couldn’t get it to knit, the yarn just kept falling off! I promised to look at it that night– I am a knitter, I had a regular knitting machine for years, and I even had one of these tube-knitters as a child that I used all the time–
Everything on this machine is made of plastic– even the hooks. Ours caught on the yarn guide every time you cranked the handle– so it was a very choppy machine, loud, and the resulting “twang” of the plastic hooks as they caught the guide would often pop the yarn right out of the hook. I worked on this machine for over 2 hours and tried FIVE different kinds of yarn and the ONLY yarn I had ANY luck with was the eyelash yarn provided (and I even tried a nice, smooth fingering weight yarn!) Even that was quite frustrating as it skipped stitches that I had to keep picking up (and they don’t give you the crochet-hook shaped hook that my machine had when I was a child, so it’s almost impossible to pick up missed stitches.)

Because my daughter had so wanted this thing, I took it to a die-hard knitting friend of mine hoping she could work some magic– But she only had 30 minutes patience with the thing, and then said “I know what is wrong with it” and I said “What?” and she said “It doesn’t knit!”

Also, they provide this handle for carrying that you are supposed to remove when you use the machine– the pins that hold on the handle are VERY thin, cheap, and also PLASTIC– Ours broke the second time I took the handle off. It went back into the box and back to the store with a request they find a different brand.

I say tube knitting machines are wonderful– I had one as a child and loved and used it regularly– THIS ONE, HOWEVER, IS JUNK. Save your money and find a sturdier, better brand.
